New York Institute For the Blind - Malta Connection
In the searching of Malta’s archives, a curious item appeared in our minutes relating to the donation of an eight to the New York School for the Blind. Upon further investigation it was found that indeed we had donated an eight, and that there was at one point in Rowing History an active program for students at the School. Malta’s connection turned out to be Seth Hoard a longtime member, and also with strong ties to New York. He was one of the sponsors and coaches of these students.
In the following documents you will see, that they raced despite their limitations against the best high schools of the day. Though they had a sighted coxswain, the students use sounds and other cues such as thumbtacks on the oar handles to sense their movement and to keep in sync. The program was founded by Johnny Hordines, a school administrator.
As a result of call of a blinded Veteran who was asking about if there had been a race between Army and Navy blinded veterans in Philadelphia, it turned out that indeed there was, in 1944 with crews coached by Garett Gilmore of Bachelors Barge Club and Olympic Medalist in the single. Also, on the river for many years was Raul Betancout who was blind but regularly rowed a double in his later years University Barge Club.
Another story of the sport where adversity can be overcome to continue its enjoyment.
