University Barge Club
Founded in 1854, the University Barge Club stands as a beacon of tradition and excellence in the rowing world. As the second oldest rowing club on Philadelphia’s iconic Boathouse Row, UBC has been at the forefront of promoting the art of rowing and fostering camaraderie among its members. Our club has nurtured generations of rowers, from competitive athletes to recreational enthusiasts, all united by a shared love for the sport and the river. With a commitment to maintaining our historic boathouse and a fleet of high-performance boats, we continue to honor our past while embracing the future. Join us as we celebrate over 150 years of rowing history and community spirit.
Collection Overview
For generations, “Bargees,” members of the University Barge Club have competed, gathered, and built traditions that define the character of the Club. The UBC Historical Collection preserves the tangible artifacts and recorded memories that embody that legacy and document the Club’s development from its founding to the present day.
Some of the Collection’s highlights include:
- Trophies and awards
- Paintings and decorative artwork
- Historic photographs
- Administrative records and log books
- Regatta programs and rowing memorabilia
Each object carries its own story — of competition, camaraderie, leadership, and continuity along the river. Together, these materials form a living archive that preserves UBC’s traditions, achievements, and institutional memory for future generations.
