About
Undine Barge Club
Organized in 1856, Undine was first housed in a simple 50’ x 8’ shed moving to the current Historic Boathouse in 1882. This Boathouse is an example of the world-famous genius of Philadelphia Architect Frank Furness. Undine throughout its history and to the present day is focused on the development of young athletes to race and reach their maximum potential. Both men and women from Undine have won medals at the World Championships, Olympics and PanAmerican games. These achievements have been captured in the artifacts and memorabilia presented in this collection. Undine’s core values of stewardship and fellowship are the backbone to maintaining the physical and cultural structure of the club.
Undine is also unique in Philadelphia in having its own upriver club located in East Falls named Castle Ringstetten, also designed by Frank Furness and then dedicated in May of 1876. It is located on a parcel owned by the Club, and it hosts monthly club dinners and meetings that help nurture the club’s Coeur d’esprit.
The Undine Collection Overview
The artifacts that memorialize the victories and history of the club are spread across several venues. Primarily, they are housed in the main boathouse on Historic Boathouse Row. The Boathouse by itself is an inventory and assemblage of historic and unique construction elements including trusses, gables, custom designed stained glass, wood balustrades and balconies.
Upriver, the Castle also displays many artifacts on its walls, mantel, and shelves. These include multiple trophies won by the Undine Schuylkill Navy Cross Country Run teams and rowing crews. Of note is a charcoal sketch of Frank Furness, framed with his Civil War-era credentials and an image of the Medal of Honor he earned for his service in 1865.
Finally, many historic documents such as meeting minutes, administrative records, regatta programs, correspondence and logbooks are held at The Independence Seaport Museum located on Philadelphia’s Penn Landing waterfront. These are accessible through appointments by contacting the Archival Records Department.
The Undine Historical Collection that is represented in this collection, begins to preserve the tangible artifacts and memories that have tracked Undine from its founding to the present day. It is a growing collection as Undine continues to make new history. Please stay posted and keep checking this collection for updates as we grow!
